Minimising Manual Cleaning – Maximising Hygiene Consistency

Why opt for a Barrel Washer – and what distinguishes the JEROS solution?

Barrels are a vital component across a broad range of industries, including food manufacturing and pharmaceutical production.

They're widely used in dairies, fish and seafood processing plants, and in the manufacture of preserved goods, pickled products, marinades, cheese powder, and pharmaceutical substances.

However, due to their size and cylindrical shape, barrels can be tough to clean effectively by hand. Manual washing demands time and labour – and often results in inconsistent hygiene standards.

A JEROS barrel washer delivers dependable, high-standard cleaning and disinfection of two 200-litre barrels per cycle.

  • Engineered to reach every surface, both internal and external, the system replaces manual pressure washing with an automated, water-saving solution that ensures traceable, repeatable hygiene results – every time.

  • By reusing 85°C rinse water in subsequent cycles and achieving up to 80% water savings compared with manual methods, the washer reduces operational costs and supports a more sustainable workflow.

In addition, the automatic lid lift significantly improves ergonomics by removing the need for heavy lifting.

Why opt for a Barrel Washer – and what distinguishes the JEROS solution?

How the JEROS Barrel Washer Operates:

Fully automated barrel cleaning – inside and out in a single cycle

Barrels are positioned with the opening facing downwards over specially engineered rotating nozzle rods, which deliver thorough 360° internal cleaning. The unit is built to handle up to two barrels per cycle, though actual capacity depends on barrel height and diameter.

Simultaneously, a movable wash frame with fixed-position nozzles moves back and forth to ensure uniform cleaning of the outer surface. The entire process runs automatically – delivering consistent, validated hygiene results every time.

Ergonomic design and automated lid lift

The integrated lid-lifting mechanism eliminates the need for manual handling, significantly improving operator safety. All internal surfaces are angled and manufactured from smooth stainless steel to ensure water and debris flow directly to the drain.

No standing water. No residue. No contamination risk.

Efficient and sustainable operation

Each wash cycle uses only 16 litres of water. Rinse water is collected and reused in the next cycle, reducing overall consumption by up to 80% compared with manual washing methods.

The system features two fully insulated tanks – one for washing, one for rinsing – to reduce heat loss. The lid's exterior remains safe to touch during operation.

Power consumption depends on cycle duration, temperature settings, and the incoming water temperature. Electrical installation requires circuit breakers rated for 18.5 kW.

Final rinse for high-level hygiene assurance

At the end of production, the machine completes a final rinse using 85 °C hot water to ensure complete disinfection. The built-in drain pump then empties the system entirely – from both top and bottom – leaving no residual water in pipes or tanks. This prevents bacterial growth and eliminates odour issues.

The Journey of the Barrel Washer

The JEROS barrel washer started its journey as a customised solution for Orkla in Sweden, where the well‑known blue plastic barrels were employed to store pickled cucumbers. The prior cleaning method relied on manual power rinsing – labour-intensive, inconsistent, and consuming large volumes of water and chemicals.

In response to Orkla's challenge, we introduced a fully automated barrel washer, which replaced manual workflows with a reliable, repeatable process. Today, this unit is firmly embedded in the hygiene operations of food producers and pharmaceutical manufacturers alike.

Dairy plants in Spain and Ireland now utilise the machine to cleanse barrels used for cheese brine. At the same time, seafood processors, marinade kitchens, and firms handling bacterial cultures or pharmaceutical compounds have adopted the same technology.

What started as a one‑off project has grown into a validated standard solution for sectors that demand rigorous hygiene, operational efficiency, and full traceability.

Typical users of JEROS barrel washers include:

  • Fish and seafood processing companies
  • Producers of marinades, pickles, and canned goods
  • Dairy operations storing yoghurt or cheese in barrels
  • Industrial organisations using barrels for bacterial cultures or additives.

Typical users of JEROS barrel washers

This barrel washer is used to clean pails containing Greek yoghurt.

Two pails from the dairy – along with their lids and accessories – are washed in a single cycle.

The washer is designed so the rotating nozzle rods can be removed when switching to other cleaning applications.

The nozzle rod openings are sealed off, allowing the machine to be used as a utensil washer.

FAQ: Common Questions About the JEROS Barrel Washer

Maintenance & Operation

How to Extend the Service Life of Your Barrel Washer

A JEROS barrel washer is engineered for long-term, high-demand use. To maintain reliable performance and extend its lifespan, we recommend implementing the following routine maintenance schedule:

  • Daily: Empty and clean the machine's filters. Run the automatic drain cycle to ensure no standing water remains in the pipework or drainage system.

  • Weekly: Inspect the heating element for limescale or detergent build-up. Check hoses, nozzle rods, and seals for signs of blockage or residue.

  • As needed: Use the integrated cleaning programme to flush and disinfect the wash chamber with 85 °C hot water. If your site operates with hard water, a water softener is recommended to protect the heating element and ensure consistent cleaning performance.

Following these simple routines will help maintain hygiene standards, prevent operational disruptions, and minimise the risk of bacterial build-up or unnecessary repairs.

Is a JEROS Barrel Washer Right for Your Operation?

If your production process involves the use of barrels or pails for storage, maturation, or transport, a JEROS barrel washer provides a sustainable, dependable hygiene solution. It reduces water and energy consumption, improves ergonomics, and delivers consistent, documented cleaning results.
