Reducing Manual Cleaning – and Maximizing Consistency

Why choose a barrel washer and what sets the JEROS solution apart?

Barrels are essential across a wide range of industries, from food production to pharmaceutical processing.

They're commonly used in dairies, fish and seafood factories, and in the production of preserved foods, pickled products, seasoning blends, cheese powder, and pharmaceutical ingredients.

But their size and shape make them notoriously difficult to clean thoroughly by hand. Manual cleaning is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and rarely delivers consistent hygiene results.

A JEROS barrel washer ensures reliable, thorough cleaning and disinfection of two 200 L barrels at a time.

Designed to reach every curve – inside and out – the system replaces high-pressure manual rinsing with an automated, water-efficient, and fully traceable hygiene solution. Every cycle delivers the same validated result.

Thanks to the reuse of 85°C rinse water in the next cycle and overall water savings of up to 80% compared to manual cleaning, you benefit from lower operating costs and a more sustainable process.

At the same time, the automatic lid-lift significantly improves working conditions by eliminating heavy manual handling.

Let’s talk about how the JEROS barrel washer can streamline your workflow
Why choose a barrel washer and what sets the JEROS solution apart?

How the JEROS Barrel Washer Works:

Fully automated barrel washing – inside and out in a single cycle

The barrels are placed with the opening facing downward over specially developed rotating nozzle rods, which thoroughly clean the entire inside, 360°. The machine is designed to accommodate up to 2 barrels at a time, though actual capacity depends on the height and diameter of the barrels.

At the same time, a movable washing frame with fixed-position nozzles travels back and forth, ensuring effective cleaning of the exterior. The entire wash cycle is fully automatic and delivers consistent results – every time.

Ergonomic design and automatic lid lift

The automated lid-lifting system eliminates the need for heavy lifting, improving workplace safety. All internal surfaces are angled and made from smooth stainless steel, directing water and residue straight to the drain.

No standing water. No residual moisture. No risk of contamination.

Resource-efficient, sustainable operation

Each wash cycle uses only 16 liters of water. Rinse water is captured and reused in the following cycle, reducing total water consumption by up to 80% compared to manual washing.

The washer includes two separate, fully insulated tanks – one for wash, one for rinse, minimizing heat loss. The exterior of the lid is designed to remain safe to the touch throughout operation.

Energy consumption depends on wash duration, temperature, and the inlet water temperature. The electrical installation requires breakers rated for 18.5 kW.

Final rinse with high hygiene assurance

At the end of the production cycle, the machine performs a final rinse with 85°C hot water to ensure thorough disinfection. The integrated drain pump then completely empties the system from the top and bottom, leaving no standing water in pipes or tanks. This prevents bacterial growth and eliminates odor risks.

Let's discuss how a JEROS barrel washer can support your production – automating hygiene while dramatically reducing water and labor.

The Evolution of the Barrel Washer

The JEROS barrel washer started its journey as a customised solution for Orkla in Sweden, where the well‑known blue plastic barrels were employed to store pickled cucumbers. The prior cleaning method relied on manual power rinsing – labour-intensive, inconsistent, and consuming large volumes of water and chemicals.

In response to Orkla's challenge, we introduced a fully automated barrel washer, which replaced manual workflows with a reliable, repeatable process. Today, this unit is firmly embedded in the hygiene operations of food producers and pharmaceutical manufacturers alike.

Dairy plants in Spain and Ireland now utilise the machine to cleanse barrels used for cheese brine. At the same time, seafood processors, marinade kitchens, and firms handling bacterial cultures or pharmaceutical compounds have adopted the same technology.

What started as a one‑off project has grown into a validated standard solution for sectors that demand rigorous hygiene, operational efficiency, and full traceability.

Typical users of JEROS barrel washers include:

  • Fish and seafood processing companies
  • Producers of marinades, pickles, and canned goods
  • Dairy operations storing yoghurt or cheese in barrels
  • Industrial organisations using barrels for bacterial cultures or additives.

Typical companies using JEROS barrel washers

This barrel washer is cleaning pails used to store Greek yoghurt.

Two of the dairy's pails, lids, and accessories are washed simultaneously.

The barrel washer is designed to remove the rotating nozzle rods when the dairy needs to clean items other than pails.

The nozzle rod openings are sealed off, allowing the machine to function as a utensil washer.

Maintenance & Operation

Ensuring a Long Service Life

A JEROS barrel washer is built for many years of intensive operation, but to maintain dependable performance and maximize lifespan, we recommend the following routine maintenance plan:

  • Daily: Empty and clean the machine's filters. Run the automatic drain‑cycle program to ensure no residual water remains in pipes or drains.

  • Weekly: Inspect the heating element for scale and detergent buildup. Check hoses, nozzle rods, and seals for deposits or blockages.

  • As needed: Activate the integrated cleaning program, which automatically flushes and disinfects the wash chamber using 85 °C hot water. If you have hard water, install a water-softening system to protect the heating element and maintain consistent wash performance.

By following these routines, you preserve machine efficiency and hygiene standards – and avoid downtime, bacterial buildup, and unnecessary repairs.
